Finding Solace in the Wave of Light: Honouring Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month
October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month which recognises and supports families and friends of those affected by pregnancy and baby loss. Every year, October 15th marks the internationally recognised “Wave of Light”. This is a special time, when across the world at 7 pm (local time) candles, monuments, landmarks, and buildings are lit in pink and blue, as a touching tribute to families who have joined together to commemorate their much-loved babies who have died too soon.
For a sixth year, WaterWipes® will be participating in the “Wave of Light” as a mark of respect to those affected by miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal death.
People in Drogheda, Ireland will see theWaterWipes Global Headquarters building lit in pink and blue illuminations to show its support for the “Wave of Light” in addition to the work of Féileacáin(Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Association of Ireland).
October provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the impact of pregnancy and baby loss and to enable access to essential services that are needed to support bereaved families.
There are many ways for people in the community to participate in raising awareness during this month:
Light a candle at home and share a photo on social media with the hashtag #feileacainwaveoflight #waveoflight.
Attend local remembrance and memorial events or virtual gatherings.
Reach out to support organisations that offer resources and assistance to grieving parents.
Offer support and provide a safe and confidential setting for those bereaved through infant loss, to allow them to openly share their experiences.
Féileacáin is the national charity in Ireland supporting families affected by perinatal loss. As a volunteer-led organisation, it relies on the support of the community and the families who avail of the services.
